Isolated Acrania in the Presence of Amniotic Band Syndrome

چکیده
Acrania is an extremely rare congenital developmental anomaly. It is often confused with another disease entity, anencephaly. Even though these two developmental defects often occur simultaneously, they are believed to have different pathogenic mechanisms. We report the case of a 22-year-old woman with an unremarkable first trimester pregnancy who delivered a demised male fetus at 16 weeks gestation. External and microscopic examination of the fetus revealed normal development in all internal organs. The brain was covered by leptomeninges only, with an absence of skull and overlying skin. Additionally, both the fetus and placenta showed evidence of amniotic band syndrome. A diagnosis of isolated acrania in the presence of amniotic band syndrome was made. The exact etiology of acrania is not well understood. Two popular theories suggest that amniotic bands or a migration failure of the ectodermal mesenchyme may play a role in the pathogenesis. We believe that isolated acrania may represent a group of developmental anomalies which share a common ultimate outcome: absence of the neurocranium with relatively minor effects on brain development. Amniotic Band Syndrome with the Involvement of Trunk: A Case Report
Amniotic Band Syndrome is a sporadic congenital disorder that may result in constriction bands, amputation and multiple craniofacial, visceral and body wall defects. Its incidence is estimated at approximately 1:5000 to 1:10,000 pregnancies. Band formation most frequently affects the distal segments, including the hand. We report a case of constriction amniotic bands involving the trunk.
متن کاملFirst-trimester echogenic amniotic fluid in the acrania-anencephaly sequence.
OBJECTIVE To describe the association between echogenic amniotic fluid and first-trimester fetal acrania. METHODS Nine fetuses with acrania were examined between 11 weeks' and 13 weeks 6 days' menstrual age for the presence of echogenic free-floating particles in the amniotic fluid. Cases were classified into 3 types according to the echogenicity of the amniotic fluid: similar to (type 0), sl...
متن کاملBLOODY DISCHARGE IN THE CONSERVATIVE MANAGEMENT OF PREMATURE RUPTURE OF MEMBRANES AS AN INDICATOR OF AMNIOTIC BAND SYNDROME
In this case report, it is our purpose to relate our findings concerning bloody discharge as an ominous sign in the conservative management of premature rupture of membranes, (PROM) as well as to present relevant findings of the amniotic band syndrome such as amputation of one leg, constriction rings in two fingers, and pseudosyndactyly in the toes of the remaining foot in a 28 week old ne...
متن کاملPerioperative management of amniotic band syndrome: a case report and literature review
Amniotic band syndrome (ABS) is a rare condition, potentially associated with a variety of different birth defects. It is also known as ADAM complex (amniotic deformities, adhesion, mutilation), amniotic band sequence, amniotic disruption complex, annular grooves, congenital amputation, congenital constricting bands, Streeter bands, Streeter anomaly, transverse terminal defects of limb, aberran...
متن کاملAmniotic band syndrome with sacral agenesis and umbilical cord entrapment: A case report emphasizing the value of evaluation of umbilical cord.
Amniotic band syndrome is a rare congenital disorder caused by entrapment of fetal parts by fibrous amniotic bands in utero. The congenital anomalies seen in this syndrome vary widely and defects may be isolated or multiple and do not follow a specific pattern. Asymmetric distribution of defects is the hallmark of this syndrome. The diagnosis is difficult to make on ultrasound and relies on ide...
